In the cosmetics industry, the quality of the finished product starts with the quality of the raw materials — and with the way they are handled. Natural and synthetic waxes, shea butter, lanolin, fatty alcohols, emulsifiers, oils and glycols arrive at the plant in drums and tanks and are largely solid or semi-solid at room temperature: before weighing and mixing they must be melted or brought to working temperature.
It is a more delicate operation than it appears: many cosmetic raw materials are heat-sensitive, and localised overheating can alter their colour, odour and functional properties.
